Renaissance Mountain Bike Tour
This is a 4 legs mountain bike tour across the surroundings of Florence, fascinating for their landscape and Nature as well as for the art and history they contain. It follows a ring-shaped 130 km. long itinerary through the nature of the Florence countryside and through the many examples of its art and history. Cycling on the hills, in the woods, by the ploughed fields, we’ll cross areas of great landscape significance, encountering monasteries, castles, hospices to welcome pilgrims, ancient walled communities, and riding sections of paved roads that go back to Roman or Medieval times, while ideally our eye is always on the old center of the city of the lily, whose focal point is the dome of the cathedral, the masterpiece of Filippo Brunelleschi, which identifies Florence.
The program Day 1 : Florence - Bivigliano - 32 km. (16 offroad) - The first leg of this bike tour is a very rewarding stage from the point of view of nature and landscape. The route gradually ascends the slopes of Monte Morello, the Mons Maurilius of the Romans, from which there are splendid views both over the city of Florence and over the Mugello, as well as of the more distant Apennines. Then it follows quiet, shady pathways as far as Bivigliano. Along the way picnic with hand-produced Tuscan cold meats and cheeses. Dinner at your own.
Day 2 : Bivigliano - Pontassieve - 32 km. (6 offroad) - After a very rewarding uphill to the scenic Sanctuary of Montesenario, we’ll be riding (this time mainly downhill) to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, before descending along a beautiful paved road to Santa Brigida. From there the itinerary passes through a lovely landscape that slopes towards the Val di Sieve, dotted with stupendous farms and hamlets and restored windmills. Along the way picnic with hand-produced Tuscan cold meats and cheeses. Dinner at Restaurant Lavacchio.
Day 3 : Pontassieve - Impruneta - 37 km. (16 offroad) - The route will take us along narrow, ancient roads with fine views over the Arno Valley, up to the monastery of L’Incontro. From there we’ll reach the Fonte Santa Natural Park, where an exciting downhill through the woods will introduce us to the gentle landscapes of Chianti. Cycling across vineyards and olive groves we’ll end up at Impruneta, the “capital” of terracotta ware. Along the way picnic with hand-produced Tuscan cold meats and cheeses. Dinner at your own.
Day 4 : Impruneta - Florence - 45 km. (20 offroad) - After an easy 7 km. downhill with very worthwhile views over Florence itself and of the grand architectural complex of the Certosa we’ll climb again into a hilly landscape dotted with villas and farmhouses before moving upstream along the Arno to end up at the Parco delle Cascine at the gates of Florence. Along the way picnic with hand-produced Tuscan cold meats and cheeses. Farewell dinner at Restaurant Gastone.
